20-014 'Deep Blue'
oil on canvas
In response to the culture of painting, the act of blending the canvas becomes a repetitive and almost performative gesture. Challenging the beliefs of what it means to be a technically skilled painter, each stroke hides the next, producing a transitive space in which color is the only visual stimuli. Where no individual strokes are visible are, in fact, thousands of cumulative stokes made to cancel each other out. The visual obscurity encourages the viewer's eye to meander across the surface and observe subtle tonal shifts as the eye attempts to focus on any given loci.
